Jauhr E Teg is California Gatka Dal’s annual 3v3 fari-soti gatka tournament. It was born of Ustaad Baljit Singh Bomba’s desire to host a gatka world cup. Ustaad Ji and his students, together with the Ustaads of California Gatka Dal hence labored to innovate the format and style of play of gatka in North America. Jauhr E Teg aspires to embody the spirit of old-school open akhara gatka taught to us by our ustaads, and the refined professionalism of modern sport.
Jauhr E Teg is the name of a famed composition by early 20th century poet Muhammad Allah Yaar Khan Jogi pertaining to the shahidi of Sahibzada Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji. The saakhi of their shahidi has been recounted and commemorated by their siblings, Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Khalsa, for hundreds of years. The heroes and shahids of Bhai Ratan Singh Bhangu’s Sri Gur Panth Prakash remember the 4 Sahibzadas as they struggle through the intense tribulations of the 18th century’s ghallugharas and struggle for Sikh self-determination in Punjab. The love, valiance, and devotion of the Sahibzadas and the Shahids they inspired stand as an example for Jauhr E Teg. It is in their name we aim to promote the study and practice of gatka and commitment to the panth.
Jauhr refers to the elemental qualities of a warrior or their weapon. The crystalline patterns found on antique shastar are also called jauhr. Jauhr E Teg is California Gatka Dal’s invitation to the gatka world to show us what you’re made of and earn the pleasure of the Guru and the Panth.
